"X" and the pebbles

click photo to enlarge
This section of "no parking" yellow hatching on a slipway to the beach at Morecambe, Lancashire, was still littered with a few pebbles thrown up by the last storm.

"Listen! you hear the grating roar
Of pebbles which the waves draw back, and fling,
At their return, up the high strand,
Begin, and cease, and then again begin,
With tremulous cadence slow, and bring
The eternal note of sadness in."
Matthew Arnold (1822-1888), English poet, essayist and school inspector, from "Dover Beach"
